PM in hot water after backtracking statement on banning politicians attending school functions

Colombo, March 12 (Daily Mirror) - Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya is in hot water after backtracking her statement on banning politicians attending functions at schools.

She told parliament yesterday that she had not imposed a law banning any politicians from attending functions at schools and that she had only said politicians must avoid using the school system for political ends.

She said this while responding to a statement by SLPP MP D.V. Chanaka that ruling party politicians were attending functions at schools despite the Prime Minister's ban.

"We want to know whether the ban imposed by the Prime Minister applies only to Opposition MPs. We saw NPP MP Ashoka Ranwala attending a school function in Gamapaha," he said.

The Prime Minister said she had not imposed a law banning politicians attending school functions.

"I only said all politicians have a responsibility not to use school systems for political matters. The media reports are false," she said.

However, on September 26, 2024 Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya had instructed Education Ministry officials not to invite politicians to schools or school events. A statement released by the Education Ministry soon after stated that Prime Minister Harini had instructed all officials to immediately stop inviting politicians to school events.
