Colombo, July 18 (Daily Mirror) - A section of the main kitchen at the Galle Face Hotel in Colombo was temporarily ordered to be closed by the Public Health Department of the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) following complaints of suspected food poisoning.

It was reported that several customers fell ill after consuming meals at the hotel in recent days.

Numerous online reviews also showed customer complaints regarding the quality and condition of the food served at the hotel.

As a result, the Public Health Department launched an investigation and instructed the hotel management to temporarily close part of its kitchen as a precautionary measure.

However, a CMC spokesperson said that the kitchen was cleared to reopen after the necessary rectifications were made. A sample was taken from the kitchen and sent for laboratory testing.

Following the Daily Mirror article, senior representatives from the Galle Face Hotel contacted the Daily Mirror, stating that the kitchen was never closed and that CMC officials had only visited the hotel for an inspection.

They reiterated that the kitchen is fully operational.

When the owners are running the hotel as a hobby , not considering as a professional/ business establishment it’s not a surprise this could be happened sooner or later

I have been going to Galle Face Hotel for many years and I found recently having stomach aches after returning home.I suspect they are having oily food to increase shelf life and food is moved from one meal to another eg: Patties, Cutlets Chinese rolls are rotated from High Tea to Dinner and may be kept in freezers for next day consumption. They are also quite expensive considering they are not a 5 Star hotel. Prices are not much different to leading 5 stars like Cinnamon and Kingsbury. Hope the management will rectify these shortcomings.

Most of the hotels are like this. Poor quality food and lethargic service. The management has swollen heads.

Too much cost cutting in Food and beverage. the verandah buffet felt more like a roadside eatery. there were far too many flies, which was quite unhygienic and disappointing.

As a regular during 1990's when the Galle Face hotel managing by RAFFELS and on my recent visit late last year I could see the poor quality of Food and Service , is a sad situation for a hotel that has a very long history in hospitality industry . Galle Face Hotel should be taken by the government and establish a good management under the Tourist Ministry , since this hotel has a very important role in the industry .

Why should the government take it over? If someone can't do it properly its not the government's job, to takeover and run it. They can always sell it to another party who could manage it better
