Colombo, April 9 (Daily Mirror) - Public Health Inspectors (PHI) conducted surprise inspections across Nuwara Eliya town on April 9, targeting restaurants, bakeries, and wholesale and retail shops ahead of the upcoming Spring Festival, in a bid to ensure quality and safety for consumers.
The operation was carried out jointly by the Nuwara Eliya Medical Officer of Health Office and the Nuwara Eliya Municipal Council Public Health Inspectors. Authorities said the inspections focused on maintaining proper hygiene standards and preventing the sale of substandard food items during the busy festive period.
During the raid, a number of shop owners were produced before the Nuwara Eliya Magistrate’s Court and legal action was initiated against them on multiple charges, including selling food unfit for consumption, operating in unsanitary conditions, improper food preparation, and selling items without proper labeling.
Officials highlighted that the inspections will continue to ensure that businesses comply with public health regulations, especially as the town prepares to welcome an influx of visitors for the Spring Festival.
