The British government has so far assisted the voluntary return of over sixty migrants, located in Diego Garcia -British Indian Ocean Territory by plane to Sri Lanka, Minister of State -Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office-Jesse Norman informed UK Parliament.

He said that migrants on the British Indian Ocean Territory are not in detention and are free to leave at any time.

“The UK government remains committed to supporting the departure of the migrants from the British Indian Ocean Territory, and to meeting its legal obligations to ensure that they are not at risk of persecution on return to their country of nationality,” the minister stated.

The UK has leased the British Indian Ocean Territory to the US, which operates a military base there. A large number of Sri Lankan failed asylum seekers are at the island for several months. (Sunil Jayasiri)

What right Britain has to own an island in Asia ? What happened to the islanders when Britain leased out the stolen land to the Americans. They do horrible things yet they call Putin as a war criminal.

Well said. The British hold the unenviable reputation as ruthless rulers who exploited the colonies, pilfering their wealth. Their arrogance continues to date. Sadly, Sri Lankans are too gutless to call them out for past crimes and instead are being continuously being pressed around by these very same folks on our domestic issues.

The islanders were forcibly removed by the British before leasing it to the Americans. Just imagine Russia or China or India doing such a horrendous thing, then there would have been an international outcry and these same culprits would join like a gang and either take military action or impose severe sanctions. We need justice in this world and hopefully in the near future there would be a Russia-China-India military allaiance to challenge the “Western Gang”

@ Hands off Asia- matters happened hundreds of years ago cannot be rectified now. Sri Lanka was under Portuguese, Dutch and British. No country was perfect in the past. I thank Britain for having given us ENGLISH language - ‘ Lingua Franca ‘, Tea, coffee, roads, schools, railways. I curse England for not having divided SL back into the two states they amalgamated to form CEYLON for easy administration.

@Hands off Asia. Well said!! The ICJ gave a judgement 2-3 years ago ordering Britain to vacate the island and hand it back to it's natives!! But these illegal invaders and neo colonists continue to encroach irrespective of this judgement for the last several decades!! Disgusting!!!
