Kiribathgoda, April 4 (Daily Mirror) - The government spends more than Rs. 6 million of public tax money to produce a single doctor, Rural Development, Social Security and Community Empowerment Minister, Upali Pannila said today.
Addressing the opening ceremony of a private hospital in Kiribathgoda this morning (04), the Minister highlighted the significant public investment made in higher education, particularly in the medical field. He noted that the cost of training a doctor is considerably higher compared to other professions.
According to the Minister, the government spends approximately Rs. 3 million to produce an engineer, underscoring the comparatively high expenditure required for medical education.
Highlighting the societal value of the medical profession, Prof. Pannila referred to the legacy of King Buddhadasa, who was renowned as a “Veda Raja” (physician king). He said that doctors have long been held in high regard in Sri Lankan society and expressed confidence that they would continue to serve in a manner that upholds this respect.
The Minister made these remarks while underscoring the importance of maintaining standards and accountability in professions supported by public funds.
