Over 60% of casino players gamble online

Colombo, Oct 14 (Daily Mirror)- It has been revealed that more than 60 percent of casino players in Sri Lanka engage in online gambling making it nearly impossible for authorities to impose and collect taxes.

The disclosure was made during the latest meeting of the Committee on Public Finance (COPF), chaired by Dr. Harsha de Silva.

Dr. de Silva instructed the relevant state officials to expedite the establishment of the Casino Regulatory Authority to enable the government to recover lost tax revenue.

Officials informed the committee that the authority is expected to be established by June 2026.

There is no question of tax here as 95% of those who play loose their money. In casino, the owners make money and players loose. They keep the prizes as frequent as possible but lower amounts so the players end up playing back the winnings too. At the end the winnings are coming back to the casino owners. Once in a way someone will win a sizable amount but that money if not wisely spent , will be hone too soon as well. So tax the owners not the players. If you tax the winnings then you should allow losses as deduction as well.

How much money do you think people make from Gambling? My guess is that maybe 1 to 5% of gamblers would be ahead with winnings to be taxed. Hardly worth stressing over lost revenue from the gamblers. The real money makers are the casinos, tax them on their turnover, it will make up for more than the lost revenue from gamblers.
