Colombo, July 31 (Daily Mirror) - The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) announced that 567 court cases have been filed over the past seven months against individuals and unlicensed agencies involved in foreign employment frauds.

The Bureau said it received 2,620 complaints during this period, with over Rs. 199.4 million recovered from suspects for defrauding job seekers.

The SLBFE’s Special Investigation Division also carried out five raids, including one on a licensed employment agency engaged in illegal activities. A total of 36 individuals were arrested, including seven from licensed agencies.

In 2024 alone, the Bureau has recovered Rs. 18.25 million for victims of employment-related fraud. A total of 4,658 complaints were recorded over the past year.

The SLBFE urged the public to exercise caution, especially when dealing with job offers in countries such as Israel, South Korea, Japan, Romania and those in the Middle East, where fraud cases have been reported.

The Bureau advises the public to verify job offers by contacting its hotline 1989 and encourages anyone who has been defrauded to report such incidents.
