Over 4,600 cases filed over mosquito breeding sites so far in 2026

Colombo, July 18 (Daily Mirror) - Police have filed 4,672 court cases against individuals for maintaining premises conducive to mosquito breeding during the period from January to June 2026, the Police said.

In a statement, police said the legal action forms part of a nationwide special dengue control programme jointly conducted by the Ministry of Health, Public Health Inspectors (PHIs) and the Sri Lanka Police to curb the rapid spread of dengue.

Police noted that legal action can be instituted under Section 262 of the Penal Code against individuals who maintain mosquito breeding sites or keep their premises in an unhygienic condition that facilitates mosquito breeding.

The statement further said that under the Prevention of Mosquito Breeding Act, No. 11 of 2007, health authorities are legally empowered to issue Red Notices to owners or occupants of premises where mosquito breeding sites exist or where conditions are likely to encourage mosquito breeding due to poor sanitation.
