Colombo, June 20 (Daily Mirror) - The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) announced that it has received more than 30 complaints related to ragging incidents within the first six months of this year.
According to CID officials, the highest number of complaints, over 10, were reported from the Sabaragamuwa University. Additional complaints of new ragging incidents have also been received from the Eastern University and the Oluvil University.
An investigating officer said that comprehensive investigations are currently underway regarding these cases and emphasised that strict legal action will be taken against those found responsible.
“If students accused in these incidents are proven guilty, they could face up to 20 years in prison under the law,” the officer noted.
Meanwhile, police have urged university students to report any recent incidents of ragging by contacting the dedicated 1997 hotline, assuring confidentiality and immediate action on all complaints.
The authorities also reiterated their commitment to eradicating ragging from university environments and protecting students from harassment and abuse.
