Over 20 trains cancelled due to absence of engine drivers, guards

Colombo, May 14 (Daily Mirror)- More than 20 train journeys have been cancelled by this afternoon due to the absence of engine drivers and guards,the Railways Department said.

A railway official said engine drivers and guards had not returned for duty after the Vesak holidays.

He said more trains may have to be cancelled by this evening.

This problem has been there for the past 3,4 years, yet no action has been taken. If there are excess staff in SLTB, transfer some of them to railways with their consent and train them. When will our ministers and bureaucrats think proactively?

Basically the issue is that there aren't enough Engine drivers and guards in the Railway so if the existing staff takes holiday then there is no one to operate the trains. A comprehensive training program should be planned to increase the number of train drivers and guards.

Railway should be privatized ASAP. No where in the world such things are taking place except in this country. This country is always on reverse gear. NPP should take stern action and sack all those guys who keep away from work because they are putting the poor public into severe difficulties.
