Colombo, June 11 (Daily Mirror) - A total of 2,400 legal cases have been filed against individuals and institutions found maintaining dengue mosquito breeding sites during the special three-day dengue prevention programme conducted from June 8 to 10, health authorities said.
According to the National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU), the islandwide campaign was carried out in 74 high-risk Medical Officer of Health (MOH) divisions across 14 districts to identify and eliminate mosquito breeding grounds.
Health officials also issued 3,300 red notices to premises where dengue breeding sites were detected and immediate corrective action was required.
Speaking at a review of the programme, Dr. Jagath Amarasekera said inspections were conducted in all 74 high-risk MOH areas identified as vulnerable to dengue outbreaks.
The NDCU further revealed that nearly 39,000 dengue cases have been reported across the country so far this year.
Of these, around 8,700 cases were recorded in May alone, indicating a continued rise in infections.
Furthermore, approximately 50 percent of all dengue cases have been reported from the Western Province, while the remaining 50 percent have been recorded from eight other provinces.
