Colombo, March 9 (Daily Mirror) - Head of the CEB Transformation Task Force, Pubudu Niroshan Hedigalla said today that a total of 2,153 employees of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) have applied for the Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS).
He told reporters that no employees will lose their jobs after the dissolution of the CEB and that all the employees will be entitled to the facilities and perks enjoyed by them under the CEB.
"Only the name of the institution they used to work at will be changed," he said.
Hedigalla said electricity consumers also will feel no difference after the dissolution of the CEB, where all the services will be provided in the same manner.
"The same emergency numbers will be operational. Consumers will be able to make their bill payments in the same manner. The consumers have to deal with the Electricity Distribution Lanka (Private) Limited (EDL) instead of the CEB hereafter," he said.
He said the main purpose of establishing six companies is to create efficiency, transperancy and competition, adding that consumers will be provided electricity at an affordable rate.
"One purpose of the dissolution of the CEB is to reduce the generation cost and reduce the tariff rate. We will have to do it gradullay as agreements for some power stations were signed at higher rates two years ago," he said.
