Investigations will be reopened into more than 10,000 complaints of enforced disappearances reported in both the North and South prior to the year 2000, said Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara.
The minister said new mechanisms will be introduced to strengthen the functions of the Office on Missing Persons (OMP) and the Office for Reparations, adding that Cabinet approval has already been obtained for the initiative. A sum of Rs. 375 million has been allocated for the process.
Minister Nanayakkara was speaking at an event organized by the OMP to mark the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances at Temple Trees. He emphasized that enforced disappearances constitute crimes and assured that truth, justice, and reparations would remain central to government policy under the NPP-led administration.
