Opposition unite to oppose suppression of media

Colombo, Dec. 29 (Daily Mirror) - The opposition political parties have opposed the government's move to take action against media which had reported on the recent disaster.

Main opposition parties namely Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) and the United National Party (UNP) have come out against the move.

SLPP MP Namal Rajapaksa said it is unfair for the government to suppress the media and other institutions which had reported on the recent disaster.

"It looks like the IGP has become the government's official spokesman," he said.

Also, Mr. Rajapaksa questioned as to why the NPP MP who assaulted a police officer attached to Sooriyakanda Police station is yet to be arrested.

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa said all steps will be taken by his party to prevent such suppression of the media.

"It looks like the government is out to convert Sri Lanka into a police state and create a dictatorship. We will take every possible step to prevent such a move," he said.

UNP Chairman Wajira Abeywardena said suppressing media is a dangerous move. " All governments in the past have not suppressed media," he said.
