Opposition in shameless attempt to term President as mastermind: Def. Sec.
Refuting claims that Zahran Hashim had been paid salaries by the government, Defense Secretary Kamal Gunaratne said today the opposition was engaged in a shameless attempt to term President Gotabaya Rajapaksa as the mastermind behind the Easter Sunday attacks.
He told an online press conference at the Presidential Media Centre (PMC) that the opposition was trying to gain political mileage by creating a fear that the President had conspired to come to power through the Easter Sunday attacks.
“This is a tragic situation. Bomb explosions will cause devastation to all, irrespective of party politics whether it is SLPP, UNP, SJB or JVP. No one will explode bombs to come to power,” he said.
He said the Easter attacks had been carried out in a well-organised manner and a large number of people had been questioned and released with regard to the attacks and some more people were still being questioned.
He said investigations into the incidents had not taken place properly and that they had updated the investigation process under this government.
“We have filed cases against some suspects and some more cases are to be filed as well,” he said.
The Defense Secretary said they had conducted investigations into the allegations that Zahran was paid salaries by the government and that it was confirmed that it was completely false. (Ajith Siriwardana)
