Opposition demands cancellation of coal purchase contract

Colombo, Jan. 28 (Daily Mirror) - Opposition MPs who visited the Lakwijeya Power Plant in Norochcholai have urged the government to cancel the contract for purchasing coal, citing procedural norms and concerns over coal quality.

MP D.V. Chanaka said the government must act, as it has been confirmed that the use of inferior coal has reduced the plant’s capacity. “If the quality of coal becomes questionable twice, the contract must be cancelled according to the standard procedures for such transactions. We therefore urged the government to take appropriate steps,” he said.

Leading the visit, MP Ajith P. Perera said power plant authorities and staff had confirmed that the plant’s operations are being adversely affected by low-quality coal. He added that further drops in capacity may require the use of thermal power to meet night-time electricity demands.

MP Chaminda Wijesiri also refuted the government’s allegations that opposition MPs used parliamentary privileges to spread misinformation, noting that disclosures from power plant authorities have confirmed the impact of substandard coal on the plant’s output.

Each routine matter, like in this case the procurement and the continuous supply of coal for the massive 3x300MW Norochcholai power plant is a huge challenge for this government. The press conference today was full of apologetical explanations on how difficult this process was while all past governments managed this job without a hitch and without going into headlines (except of course during the economic crisis when the whole government was affected resulting in change of presidency). Why is this happening? Except a few bright spots here and there, the rest of the government is a total mess of incompetence, arrogance and inexperience. This is after inheriting a family stable country and even that they are now struggling to run.

How can the opposition talk about when they were in power, they imported coal from Singapore. That tiny island nation doesn't have any coal mines. I am not implying that imported coal quality is okay.
