Opposition claims to sue government over disaster absurd: SF

Colombo, Dec. 4 (Daily Mirror) - Former Member of Parliament Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka said the opposition's move to sue the government for failing to prevent the disaster is absurd and claimed that the situation would have beeen the same even if the previous rulers had been in power.

He told the media that there had been floods in the past and that the end result was the same whoever was in power.

Fonseka said the rain and flood this time was heavier and therefore the devastation was acute.

"The situation would have beeen the same if the previous rulers were in power," he said.

He said no one can do miracles as resources, equipment and manpower is limited in Sri Lanka.

"The government has to do the maximum with the available resources, equipment and manpower. If someone wants to do more, that is not possible here. We are a poor country," he said.

Good answer and right explanation: oppositions would have looted the public fund as they did it after tsunami: people are fortune enough to have this government to get some quick relief and money unlike others : MR and co family would have tested 90%’of money and fund: now at least we have more responsible and able people in power than those thrives : People now know who is good and who is bad in politics:

So agree with you Sir! The past Misfits can fool the uneducated but not the majority who are educated. This disaster was very severe and yes, government could have been more proactive before and after the initial disaster. However, being a new government and only a year into their term, they have definitely become more proactive after witnessing the calamity. Hope the constitution is amended in the near future so that no opposition can come into parliament via the back door. Only those elected by the citizens both in government and opposition can be in parliament and represent their constituents accordingly.

Sir ,they threaten to sue for everything and thing , one example of such suing is against the municipal commissioner in Colombo ,the way she conducted to select the mayor of Colombo municipal council. Case is still in the mind of Mujbeer the big talker.

Thinking that they could take the government to the court is their answer to winning back public sympathy, take it from me that you are making your situation from bad to worse. Continue with your effort, useless opposition, to find that even at the Supreme Court level, your appeal would be thrown out outright, allowing the government to counter sue you lot for trying to defame the government. If SJB or SLPP was in power, they would have stopped the rain and there would be no floods. Premadasa would have brought legal action against cyclone Ditwah and obtained compensation for sure. NPP can't even speak good English.

The Govt. was going behind petty things but failed to establish a proper action mechanism for land slides and flood. They were telling people to moveout but failed to designate locations and equip them. The North and East has seen worser rain fall but this time it seems although they had warnings they failed to safe guard the bunds. As to the excuse of inexperience how did they rush for educational reform for personal glory without carefully studying. They wanted to spend money on kelani valley extension while they are not properly equipped to run the existing net work. They were busy with finding the killer of a drug kingpin and embarassing a President for Rs.16 M internationally accepted practice. What ever the shortcoming The President accepted has acted with dedication in the current crisis and we are thankful but this was not reflected in the actions of the most ministers with one claiming and challenging that the Met. dept. which is under the govt. didn't provide any warnings.
