Colombo, March 11 (Daily Mirror) - A special committee has been appointed on the advice of Agriculture, Livestock, Lands and Irrigation Minister K.D. Lalkantha, to minimise damage caused to crops by wild animals and find solutions.
The special committee oversee the conduct of the proposed wildlife census to calculate the number of monkeys, giant squirrels and peacocks that cause the most damage to crops.
Accordingly, this census is scheduled to be conducted countrywide on March 15 from 8.00 to 8.05 am.
The Ministry announced that the distribution of the relevant leaflets is also currently underway.
Steps have been taken to establish an operations room within the premises of the Agriculture Ministry with the aim of conducting the animal census to be held on Saturday more accurately and efficiently.
The operations room will be operational from today (11) to inquire about any problems that arise during the animal census.
The special committee requests people to contact the operations room through the hotline 011-2034336 for any inquiries.
If anyone has not received the leaflet provided to mark the number of wild animals that cause damage to crops, they are requested to make a note of the animals that come during the relevant period, the Ministry said.
They also request the public for their support during the relevant period for this census, which is being conducted with community participation.
