Only 12 veterinary specialists in Sri Lanka

There are currently only 12 veterinary specialists in Sri Lanka qualified to treat sick elephants and other animals, Minister of Environment Dammika Patabendi informed Parliament today.

He noted that some of these specialists have been discouraged by remarks made by certain Members of Parliament.

“Opposition MPs have made various statements regarding the killing of elephants. One MP even shared false information about the elephant Batiya, which recently died from gunshot injuries,” the Minister said.

If you don’t have the necessary skill, experience or expertise here, please employ from abroad and let them work here for the betterment of the lives of our dogs, elephants and other animals. No point in saying much, but not actioning anything. This country needs doers not big talkers. Get cracking on the animal welfare bill yet to be passed in parliament irrespective of who comes to power and finally, take back all firearms issued to these savages, by that village idiot of a minister who wants to kill these majestic beasts. We’re becoming a laughing stock on social media internationally. Foreigners, especially westerners are very much for animal rights and welfare and rightfully should be. Buckle up now, before it’s too late.

Newly pass out veterinary surgeons coming from local University are not willing to join government services due to poor salary. Majority of the batch are migrating or self employed to earn more money. They just cover urban areas to treat household pets but not interested even to treat farm animals. This is a tragic situation.

The bigger issue here is that it reflects a a breakdown in the system, which has to be addressed, begin by listening to what educated people have to say, not politicians unless they are well educated on the subject

Why not enroll more if there is a shortage? What about shortage of resources? If you save money after eliminating corruption and wastage, the treasury must have money unless it sent to Palawaththa fund.

Yesterday seen elephants in Minneriya national park, Guide said this is the only park in Srilanka where so many elephants could be seen in any given time. He said the erea around Minneriya most of the people live on tourism related activities and he further said the country lack good veterinary sergeants and also related equipment such as props to effect methodical and effective treatment to elephant when they become sick. Assistant in this effect could be obtained from countries like Thailand where elephants are used to boost their earnings from tourism.

It is necessary to increase security with ample staff to detect Illegal encroachments and power lines, fire arms, explosives for hakka-patas, etc. and must be taken over from those areas by having frequent raids and indict and charge those involved people. .
