Parliament, Feb. 1 (Daily Mirror)-Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardane today endorsed the certificate on the Online Safety Bill which was approved by parliament last week, the Communications Department of Parliament said.

Accordingly, the said Bill will come into effect as the Online Safety Act No.9 of 2024.

The bill was passed without a vote in the House after a two-day debate during which the opposition launched a scathing attack saying it borders on the infringement of the freedom of expression.

During the Second Reading, the bill was taken to vote with 108 supporting it and 62 opposing.

    Abd Thursday, 01 February 2024 04:23 PM

Don’t even imagine, then how the would be regime will face slanders of UNP

    Dee Thursday, 01 February 2024 11:21 AM

Good move. Now people will have to take responsibility for all the crap they post! It would obviously hurt many people including ISP’s who will loose revenue. Good!

    B Thursday, 01 February 2024 11:33 AM

    Absolutely.

Natalie Nanayaka Thursday, 01 February 2024 11:57 AM

    Dumb Dee Dee Dumb Dumb

    Sokrates Thursday, 01 February 2024 12:26 PM

How can you call such an anti-democratic and dictatorship-promoting law a good move? The constitutional right to free expression and speech is one of the most important fundamental rights, which is only restricted by dictatorial regimes for selfish reasons. Everyone has the right to freely express their opinion, no matter what nonsense or crap it is; Nobody is obliged to believe what is published. Are you a supporter of a dictatorship? Then here is the well-known saying: The revolution eats its children. You may well be arrested one day for making a comment that a member of the dictatorial regime doesn't like.

    Dee Thursday, 01 February 2024 01:17 PM

Yes! I support dictatorship- that’s why I will vote for JVP this time! Can’t you see? The systematic path is being created for them to run the country

Tissa Fernando Friday, 02 February 2024 02:20 AM

Yes Dee when JVP runs the country , Sokratees will have to go back to Greece and spend the rest of his life hiding.

    johan Thursday, 01 February 2024 11:27 AM

When elected President and PM are ousted, the temporary govt. can be in power only for six months thereafter it must go for an election, that is the constitution How can a temporary govt.pass bills without valid mandate from people.Ruling party will try to misinterpretate each clause and try to be in power. Is Constitution Chaotic?

    Ruwan Thursday, 01 February 2024 04:38 PM

Even it was so, did the country have the money to spend on a national election? There were queues everywhere. But the kotiraja channel seemed oblivious to it all, sitting around a table talking gibberish how bad this government was. Some people still don't realise the danger they were in. Grow up!

    joshua Thursday, 01 February 2024 11:27 AM

Ah....as usual he has signed whatever left on the table.

    johan Thursday, 01 February 2024 02:10 PM

Because his entire family members are employed in some govt.entities and they receive all sort of perks and privileges how he can forgo that?So he has to do his mother-in -law job.

Neel Ahmed Thursday, 01 February 2024 02:10 PM

Yes, he is the most useless speaker who ever we have. Just sign the bill. It's only for the next few months, then it will varnish.

Gayantha Hemachandra Thursday, 01 February 2024 12:22 PM

Mr Speaker….You need to understand that you all can’t block or suppress people’s grievances, angers and sufferings by passing and endorsing those types of draconian legislations. No examples can not be found in history where privileged minority succeeded in suppressing , silencing and defeating underprivileged majority. Better read some history books if you have time.

June Macapagal Thursday, 01 February 2024 12:39 PM

This speaker is a stooge of the current regime and he will sign anything that is being passed.

    Kays N Thursday, 01 February 2024 12:51 PM

Seems the peeps here have not noticed that US Congress had a hearing yesterday on online safety too. A famous Founder/CEO was forced to apologise to families that were harmed and another agreed that online media needed regulation! All 5 CEO's highlighted that parental consent was required for teens to open accounts. Some (snapchat X) said that they do not permit users under 13 on their platforms. Unfortunately, Sri Lanka media fail to report global news, sometimes prefering to quote preachy ambassadors.

Rip Winkle Thursday, 01 February 2024 01:24 PM

Ranil, Tiran and Co have no idea that they are shooting themselves in their own feet. And btw, can this creepy speaker bugger even read what he signs?

    Jeanne Thursday, 01 February 2024 02:15 PM

@Gayantha : Public grievances are one thing but personal attacks and invading a personal's privacy are quite another thing. For a nation full of nosey parkers, perverts, and gossip mongers, this could be one of the few bills that will keep the children safe at least. Btw not sure what history books you are referring to - totally irrelevant.

    N.M. Perera Thursday, 01 February 2024 02:42 PM

Face Book has become a Curse to Society. Shut down this bloody curse forever.. Well done RW. Put away forever NPP which is a band of low bread rowdies. Let the better class....Royalists/ Thomians and such rise up again.

Gayantha Hemachandra Thursday, 01 February 2024 04:14 PM

Aim of this particular legislation is not to protect children from cyber bullying and abuse but to suppress dissent and opposition. Protecting children and other groups are their cover story and icing and beneath them are the dark realities hidden inside this draconian act . Other thing is that in the United States and other western democracies you can find checks and balances, rule of law and independent courts and law enforcement agencies are in force and people can lead decent lives but in Sri Lanka , only harsh laws, miseries and unspeakable hardships are the norm for general public while the privileged few are conveniently using, bending and breaking the law for their own benefits . These are the reasons today Sri Lanka is a godforsaken bankrupt lawless country among other civilised nations.

Gayantha Hemachandra Friday, 02 February 2024 03:39 AM

Since Independence in 1948 ,most of the time the country has been run by so called high-bred Royal,Thomian, Bishopian boys and girls. Outcome of their so called elite rule is a godforsaken bankrupt lawless country today among civilised and prosperous nations in the world . So we are now witnessing that the so called Low Bred Rowdies are waking up from their deep sleep and taking over their fate and destiny into their weary hands from those failed Royal

    Senura Thursday, 01 February 2024 04:26 PM

So tell me is the US congress planning to have a commission that would determine whats true and false. Dont be so ignorant. Read the bill first. This bill has been introduced to suppress voices against corruption . Little sugercoating has been done to give impression that it is for online safety

Jagath Leanage Thursday, 01 February 2024 04:40 PM

    Who cares.

    VJ Thursday, 01 February 2024 07:00 PM

The new law must be translated in to layman’s language, a list of do’s and don’t s must be published to promote awareness. The government will have to explain how they plan to enforce the law.

Concerned parents Thursday, 01 February 2024 09:11 PM

@jeanne, Absolutely right. All the dirty, degrading videos which are being circulated should stop with this and children will be able to watch a cartoon without these dirty videos popping up!

    Jeanne Friday, 02 February 2024 02:35 AM

@Dee : Be careful what you wish for. Voting for the JVP? Are you for real? Who would vote for a party that is founded on terror and murder? So, just in case you are not aware of who they are and what they stand for let me educate you. The 1987–1989 JVP insurrection, also known as the 1988–1989 revolt or the JVP troubles, was an armed revolt in Sri Lanka, led by the Marxist–Leninist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna, against the Government of Sri Lanka. The insurrection, like the previous one in 1971, was unsuccessful. And may I add, while their soldiers were getting killed left, right and centre and living in jungles and living in misery their esteemed leader was hiding away in the lap of luxury. What an idiotic comment to make.

Tissa Fernando Friday, 02 February 2024 10:02 AM

Expect confiscation of personal assets , banning of all protests and rallies, banning of all opinions against them, harsh punishment for those who do not comply with their demands, north Korea like rule.

    L Jaya Friday, 02 February 2024 02:58 AM

He is a puppet and imbecile. Lejjai to be called SL parliamentary speaker.
