Northern politicians urge for PC elections under proportional representation

Colombo, Sep.22 (Daily Mirror) -  A group of Northern politicians who previously represented the Northern Provincial Council, urged the government to hold the next Provincial Council elections under the old Proportional Representation (PR) system.

Former ITAK member Emmanuel Arnold, PLOTE member Kajadeepan, former Northern Provincial Minister and EPRLF member Dr. Sarweshwaran, former TELO representative S. Kugadas and EPDP member Navanathan jointly made this appeal.

“The Northern Provincial Council election was last held on September 21, 2013, after a gap of 12 years. Now, once again, we are compelled to speak about the issue after another 12 years,” the group said in a statement.

They pointed out that the government has claimed elections will be conducted once the delimitation committee presents its report, but has failed to give a clear timeframe.

“This government, led by the JVP, is a party that has always opposed the Provincial Councils system as a matter of policy. Therefore, we have doubts whether the government is genuinely committed to holding elections. Some in government have even referred to Provincial Councils as white elephants,” the statement read.

While stressing that Provincial Councils are not a complete solution to the national issue, the politicians maintained that they are vital to ensuring democracy.

“The government must uphold the Constitutional rights of the people. Establishing Provincial Councils through an election is essential to safeguard those rights,” they added.
