Non-academic staff launch strike in state universities

Colombo, August 20 (Daily Mirror) - Non-academic staff members across several state universities in Sri Lanka launched a symbolic strike today, protesting against government budget proposals that they claim have created severe hardships.

University Trade Union Joint Committee (UTUJC) Co-Chairman Mangala Dabarera said all non-academic staff refrained from reporting to duty in protest.

He noted that the government had reduced the 20% allowance and overtime payments while also failing to increase the promised emergency loan.

Dabarera warned that if authorities do not address their demands within the next few days, the unions will escalate the protest into a large-scale strike with the participation of other university trade unions.
