No space for underworld to re-emerge: Minister Vidyarathna

Colombo, Sept. 7 (Daily Mirror) - There is no room for the underworld to re-emerge in Sri Lanka, as the corrupt politics that once sustained it has come to an end, Plantations and Community Development Minister Samantha Vidyarathna said.

Speaking at a ceremony in Hatton today, the Minister said in the past, the underworld and politics were closely connected, with political patronage nourishing organised crime both within and beyond the country.

“The underworld has now been eradicated, and it is being cleaned step by step. People can clearly see that there is no forgiveness for the underworld anymore. Crushing it does not take much time, but the work must continue systematically,” he said.

Minister Vidyarathna added that intelligence agencies have already identified hidden weapons and assets linked to criminal networks, which are being uncovered gradually. He alleged that some of these caches are connected to former presidents, ministers and members of parliament.

“The womb of the underworld was there. Some politicians are lying, but when searches are carried out, evidence points to their own houses. The law is the same for everyone, and no one is above it,” he stressed.

Commenting further, the Minister said the government is committed to re-establishing discipline and standards in the country, including in public transport. He noted that steps are being taken to introduce regulations for buses and drivers to ensure passenger safety, despite objections.

“It is not easy to correct a country that has been on the wrong path for 76 years within a day or two. But we will bring it back to the right path in a timely manner,” he said.
