No reduction in school transport, three-wheeler fares

Colombo, June 30 (Daily Mirror) - Associations representing school transport service providers and three-wheeler operators have stated that they will not be able to reduce school transportation charges and three-wheeler rental fees despite the recent reduction in fuel prices.

Speaking on the matter, Association Chairman Lalith Chandrasiri said that although the price of diesel had been reduced by Rs. 25, operators were facing increased costs in several other areas, making it difficult to revise transport charges downward.

"Many people expect school transportation fees to be reduced following the decrease in diesel prices. There is a common perception that transport charges are increased when fuel prices rise but are not reduced when fuel prices fall. However, under the current circumstances, it is difficult for us to reduce the fees," he said.

He pointed out that the price of lubricant oil had increased from Rs. 1,100 to Rs. 1,500, while the cost of tyres had risen by around Rs. 600. In addition, the prices of spare parts had also increased significantly.

Chandrasiri further urged the government to intervene and address the rising costs of vehicle maintenance and related expenses.

"If the authorities expect us to reduce our service charges, they should also take steps to reduce the prices of these essential items. Otherwise, it will not be possible for us to continue providing these services while lowering our fees," he said.

He added that transport operators regretted their inability to revise charges at present due to the continued increase in other operational costs.
