No plans to restrict vehicle imports: Central Bank Governor

Colombo, July 23 (Daily Mirror) - Central Bank Governor Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe said that there are no plans to reimpose restrictions on vehicle imports, assuring that the market will remain open.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Dr. Weerasinghe said that neither the Central Bank nor the government has taken steps to curtail vehicle imports.

“As far as I’m aware, there is no such decision by the government. I believe the minister will make a statement confirming that there is no change,” he said.

The Governor said that macroeconomic and financial system stability continues to be a top priority. He said the Central Bank is managing borrower risks effectively and that macroprudential measures are in place to safeguard the financial sector. Pix by Pradeep Pathirana

These vehicle importers are looking for their profit only and they don't of what's happening on the roads and the lives that are lost due to accidents. I think we should restrict the import of vehicles.

For the ordinary citizens of this country it does not make any difference whether the government allows, restricts or bans importation of vehicles as any of those actions will not improve the living conditions of the people but rather drain vital foreign reserves which could otherwise be ploughed back for developmental activities but what happens is the government earns a huge tax and the vehicle importers jack up the prices of all vehicles beyond the reach of the ordinary man of this country and this is highway robbery.

May the reserves be doubled by 2028 thanks to the sacrifices of the people. But no strategic approach to start pay back massive dollar debts. Reserves deplete when paying debts, and economy collapse again. SL cannot increase production with these politically motivated policies managed by shattered system on mismatching unbalanced structural hierarchies. Change policies to engage more in online services and earn via e-remittance platforms.
