Colombo, July 25 (Daily Mirror) - There is no necessity for Deputy Defence Minister Aruna Jayasekera to resign to ensure a fair probe into the Easter Sunday attacks as the probe is carried out by Ministry of Public Security, subject Minister Ananda Wijepala told Parliament today.

He was referring to a question raised by opposition MPs Chaminda Wijesiri and Mujibur Rahman as to how the government could ensure a free and fair probe into the Easter Sunday bomb attacks with the Deputy Defence Minister in office as he is aware of facts being the Security Force Commander of the East during the time of the attack.

Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya also assured a free and fair probe.

He should resign. He will definitely interfere into this matter. Someone should take this matter to court and strip him off his ministry.

While assurances of a fair and independent investigation are appreciated, public confidence also depends on the appearance of impartiality. Given that the Deputy Minister served as Security Forces Commander in the East and is reported to have neglected prior intelligence on Zahran’s activities, and considering that he entered Parliament through the National List, it is reasonable to question the government’s decision to nominate him to parliament and subsequently appoint him as Deputy Minister of Public Security. To preserve the integrity of the process, it would be prudent for him to vacate his seat in Parliament or, at the very least, refrain from holding any ministerial or deputy ministerial position until the investigation is concluded. A transparent and independent inquiry is vital to ensure justice for the victims and to restore public trust.

This is not Clean Sri Lanka that you talked about. The government should picture themselves in the opposition and this is exactly what they would have asked of the government that decided this as well. No one is saying he is guilty, but being in a place of power within the same branch that is investigating the issue which he was also commanding officer of the area at the time is a clear conflict of interest. There is no way to say it is not.

Double standard, if the JVP (NPP) was not in power they would have demanded for the minister to resignation. Now that they are in power they thing they are angels and can act without self interest

This seems they already know the outcome of the investigation. Past presidents and prime ministers also said no one has to resign from their party.
