No more favours in school admissions, report injustices, says Harini

Colombo, April 23 (Daily Mirror) - The time when politicians, state officials and principals took advantage of school admissions is over. If there is any injustice in the admission of children to schools, it should be reported to the Education Ministry, Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya said.

While addressing a public meeting held in the Dodangoda area this afternoon, she said the government does not give special consideration to anyone.

"When people work together through consensus to improve their society, they intervene in an organised way to correct mistakes and change the system. This is the kind of change we expect. This is what democracy truly means. In the past, when you go to lodge a complaint with the police, you may have been scolded or dismissed. But now, officers listen carefully, record complaints properly and speak respectfully. This is the change people have been asking for," she said.

"The biggest problem that the people of this country had was getting a child admitted to a school. Until now, as a habit, children used to come to politicians in line to get letters to get them admitted to schools. That is how children were admitted to schools. But we changed that system. Today, the people are telling us that they know that asking for a letter is wrong. They do not want to see that mistake happen. The people who come are crying because they are sad, and I also cry for some things. But none of them have told me to do something wrong. The people themselves are saying that it is wrong to expect benefits from politicians for personal matters. If the people have become so accustomed to not asking politicians for help even if they come to us and express their sadness, even if they cry, then haven't we changed? Haven't the people changed? This is what the people of this country have demanded," the Prime Minister said.

“This new political culture must happen at every level. That change must happen with the President, the Parliament, the Cabinet of Ministers, as well as in local government institutions. If that alignment does not happen, then this cannot be done,” she added.
