No govt. succeed by censoring media

No government has survived in the world by applying censorship on media or imposing laws to control them, Mass Media Minister Dallas Alahaperuma said today.

Addressing a gathering held a to mark the 67th anniversary of Sri Lanka Press Association (SLPA) at Sri Lanka Foundation Institute , he said the governments which tried to suppress  media by laws and apply censorship on them have ended up in the dust bin.

“It is my belief that media cannot be controlled by censorship or by laws,” he said.

At the same time the Minister said media personnel should not work towards safeguarding the image their bosses and towards fulfilling their political aspirations.

“Media has to think of their readers and viewers. This is relevant to state media as well. Government is the boss of state media. Media also should not think of their ratings and their circulation. This is where both politicians and media go wrong. They have to safeguard their honour. Both these parties think fear and honors are the same.

However these two components are not the same, they are two different components. (Yohan Perera)
