No decision yet on arresting Gammanpila: CID

Colombo, Sept. 12 (Daily Mirror) - The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) today informed the Court of Appeal that no decision has yet been taken to arrest former Parliamentarian Udaya Gammanpila over a recent statement he had made to the media.

Deputy Solicitor General Sudarshana de Silva, appearing for the CID, made these submissions when a writ petition filed by Udaya Gammanpila, who is currently in Thailand, was taken up before the Court of Appeal.

According to the petition, on August 27, 2025, news reports indicated that the CID had informed the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court that an investigation had been launched to determine whether Gammanpila’s remarks constituted an offence under Section 3(1) of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) Act No. 56 of 2007 and Section 120 of the Penal Code.
