No action yet on Beira Lake stench despite promises: SJB Councillor

Colombo, Sept. 12 (Daily Mirror) - Responding to a Daily Mirror article titled 'Strong stench from Beira Lake forces hotels to close,” SJB Council Member Chamith Wijesundara has criticised Colombo Mayoress Vraie Cally Balthazar for failing to address the issue, despite previous assurances.

“This is what the Mayoress promised, and to date, no action has been taken. Now hotels are suffering, and that in turn affects tourism. All talk just like the NPP government, no action. A bunch of jokers! Three months have passed since the visit, and still no action. Shame,” he said in a post on X.

During the Colombo Municipal Council election campaign, Mayoress Balthazar had pledged to take immediate steps to resolve the problem.

Western Province Solid Waste Management Authority Chairman Chathura Kahandawarachchi on Thursday said that the stench from Beira Lake has become a serious issue, with several hotels around the lake struggling to operate under the conditions.

He said the Authority has received numerous complaints from hotel operators and residents alike. Some hotels have been forced to temporarily close, while nearby residents claim the persistent stench has made daily life unbearable.
