Colombo, July 29 (Daily Mirror) - Applications are currently being invited for admission to Grade 12 in the Advanced Level Vocational stream for the 2025/2026 academic year. The results of the G.C.E. Ordinary Level (O/L) examination are not considered for admission to this stream, providing students the opportunity to obtain a vocational qualification (NVQ Level 4) that is recognized both locally and internationally. Students can pursue this qualification while continuing their school education up to Grade 13.
Any student who has sat for the O/L examination in 2024 (2025) or within the last 2 years can apply for Grade 12 in a school with a vocational stream in their area.
Students entering Grade 12 can study modules aimed at developing soft skills and introducing vocational fields. In Grade 13, students will be linked by the school itself to a government vocational training institution for NVQ 4 level training in a suitable profession. Here, students can receive training in a vocational training institution as well as in the workplace.
Accordingly, students are entitled to vocational training opportunities in many fields such as tourism and hospitality, automotive/vehicle technology, information technology, health and care services, gem and jewelry technology, beauty, arts and crafts, food production, clothing, electrical and electronic technology, metal processing, welding, machine operation, construction industry, home decoration, garden decoration, agriculture and plantation industry, aquatic resources technology, sports, lifesaving and diving skills, trade and logistics, etc.
Students who successfully complete this training and complete their school education can obtain the NVQ 4 certificate, which can lead to employment, higher vocational education opportunities and entrepreneurship.
The application form for admission to the Advanced Level Vocational stream, list of schools that can be applied for, and fields where vocational training can be received are published under Special Notices on the website of the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education.
This stream is being implemented by the Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education Ministry with the aim of ensuring thirteen years of education to students regardless of whether they pass or fail the Ordinary Level examination.
Further information on this can be obtained by contacting the Education Branch of this Ministry or through the website of this Ministry.
