Colombo, May 28 (Daily Mirror) - Nine Fundamental Rights petitions challenging the appointment of Deshabandu Tennakoon as Inspector General of Police (IGP) were today fixed for hearing on September 8 by the Supreme Court.
The matters were fixed for September 8 when the petitions were called before the Supreme Court’s three-judge bench, comprising Justices Janak de Silva, Sobhitha Rajakaruna and Sampath Wijeratne.
These petitions are to be heard before a five-judge bench of the Supreme Court on the next hearing.
The Supreme Court has already issued an interim order restraining Deshabandu Tennakoon from exercising the powers, functions and responsibilities of the office of Inspector General of Police.
The Supreme Court further held that the petitioners had made out a strong prima facie case suggesting that the said appointment was contrary to the applicable provisions of the Constitution.
This order will be effective until the final determination of nine Fundamental Rights applications filed challenging his appointment as IGP.
