Newborn baby found abandoned in paddy field at Mawathagama



Colombo, July 18 (Daily Mirror) - A newborn baby was found abandoned in a paddy field at Sinhapurapara, Mawathagama, Kurunegala yesterday.

According to police, a villager found the infant lying under a tree while walking through the field and immediately alerted the Mawathagama Police.

Police officers, with the assistance of local residents, rescued the baby and admitted it to the Mawathagama Hospital. A doctor who examined the child said the baby appeared to be one to two days old.

Following initial treatment, the infant was transferred to the premature infant unit at the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital. Hospital sources said the baby is in good health.

Police have launched an investigation to identify those responsible for abandoning the child.
