Colombo, April 25 (Daily Mirror) - The Veterinary Faculty at Peradeniya University has introduced a novel small-sized loop designed for implantation into the uterus of female monkeys to effectively prevent pregnancy

A one-and-half-year-old female monkey that had given birth once was used for this test.

Senior Professor Ashoka Dangolla from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Peradeniya University reported that during the X-ray examination conducted after the surgery, it was observed that the implanted loop was successfully in place.

Professor Dangolla explained that this form of birth control is intended to prevent pregnancy in women. Due to previous unsuccessful attempts using a normal-sized loop, the decision was made to create a smaller-sized loop.

He noted that doctors from the Obstetrics and Neurology Department of Peradeniya Teaching Hospital, along with the Faculty of Dentistry at Peradeniya, have also contributed their expertise to this endeavour.

Additionally, he mentioned that the new smaller-sized loop has been designed to better withstand the frequent contractions of female monkeys, reducing the risk of expulsion.

"It takes half an hour to tranquilize the animal for implantation, followed by another half an hour for the surgery," he stated. "This method has the potential for practical use in controlling the monkey population in the country."

He added that the manufacturing cost for this new loop is approximately Rs. 2,000.

Ridiculous. This expense will be borne by the tax payer who is already squeezed from all sides. Not only that, it will be a way for some people to make millions in contracts for the next few years. Also, in women an IUD or "uterine loop" lasts 5 years unless an infection occurs. After that it has to be replaced. With the monkeys' life span of 20 years, are they supposed to come back 3 times more for a replacement? These wild animals roam in gangs, invade and take over entire areas. They become extremely aggressive towards humans. In India the monkey gangs attack children who are playing outside or are walking alone. They run off with babies and toddlers after grabbing them from their mother's arms. Many infants are killed this way. They break into poor homes and run away with sleeping infants. They attack adults, destroy crops. The only solution is to cull the monkeys to control the infestation and ensure the safety of people and their small children.

But to perform this, you will have to catch the monkey first, which is a tedious task. Why not by a medicine to control birth?

Do these people have any practical sense? Do they plan in handing these over to the 'monkey doctor' to install or leave them around for the female monkeys to pick up and wear?? If one has to catch the monkeys, why not catch the males and sterilize them?

    Jeanne Saturday, 27 April 2024 03:20 AM

Unbelievable. Who cares about the damn monkeys? Rs 2000 for each procedure? When people are struggling to put food on the table????? Where and what are our priorities? It's no wonder this country is going down the drain.

Politican support harming monkey more than feeding hungry Sunday, 28 April 2024 02:18 AM

The device itself is Rs. 2000. If the procedure is done properly then cost will be a lot more. The priorities of the insane politicians are clear. Appeal to the minority of mad farmers, rather than vast lost of poor and hungry.

How stupid and dumb one has to be to propose this ? Any money should be allocated for the economical infrastructure projects and not for these wasteful use. We really need to stop deforestation and let the monkeys to be in their own habitats. At this rate of cost of living soon the two legged monkeys would be living eating and defecating outside our homes.
