Colombo, September 11 (Daily Mirror) - The Education Ministry has decided to introduce a new set of rules and regulations for vehicles used to transport school children.

Deputy Minister of Education and Higher Education Dr. Madhura Senevirathna, said a special joint programme will be implemented in collaboration with the Transport Ministry to ensure the safety of school children.

“Over the past few days, several accidents have occurred involving school transport vehicles, injuring children. Transporting school children has been identified as a key concern under public transport regulations. Therefore, the Ministry will release appropriate recommendations for vehicles used to transport children to schools and for school-related activities,” the Deputy Minister said.

He added that the new regulations will be strictly enforced on all vehicles engaged in transporting school children.

In the guise of safety, what is put in place is a bureaucracy, red tape, political patronage and we the taxpayer will pay for it. It’s one way of creating worthless jobs that prevent real growth. Until people in this country understand this, they will forever be beggars !

Oh yes. Some of those vans are so old , you can’t identify them because the front face is one model rear door is from another, lights are from yet another and who knows from what the engine other parts are from?
