Colombo, March 27 (Daily Mirror) - The government is set to launch a nationwide initiative to establish new restaurants, ensuring food security and providing the public with access to nutritious and affordable meals.
According to the President’s Media Division (PMD), this program will be implemented in collaboration with the National Food Promotion Board, the Ministry of Health, and the Ministry of Agriculture. Existing restaurant owners will also be involved to secure their support. The first model restaurant under this initiative is scheduled to open on April 1 in Narahenpita.
In the second phase, the government plans to introduce a program aimed at improving the standards of existing restaurants.
A preliminary discussion on the initiative was held today (27) at the Presidential Secretariat, with the participation of officials from the National Food Promotion Board, the Ministry of Health, and the Ministry of Agriculture.
During the discussion, officials emphasized the importance of safeguarding the public’s right to safe and nutritious food. Key topics included creating an environment where consumers can access food that meets proper health standards, building consumer trust, and fostering collaboration between the public and private sectors.
Additionally, discussions focused on the practical implementation of existing food policies and standards, ensuring that the business community recognizes the importance of providing nutritious and safe meals. Officials also explored how the "Clean Sri Lanka" initiative contributes to positive changes in the food sector.
