Parliament, March 08 (Daily Mirror)- A new law to ban corporal punishment will be introduced soon, Minister of Justice Harshana Nanayakkara told Parliament today.

Speaking during the committee stage debate on the budget, the Minister said every kind of physical punishment will be banned by this law.

"Norms such as listening to children and welcoming their views on issues concerning them will also be introduced soon," he added.

This government is doing nothing. These guys just put out lists of names of former MPs who claim to have misused public money and property. Well, I gave my vote to the NPP to "take action" against the culprits. Further, the NPP ministers are good at telling thigs that "will be done in the future". But it seems that nothing is happening. You can't always say that "we are still a young government". The time is ticking, man!

Corporal punishment is a necessity in Sri Lanka to eliminate the druggies who operate. If corporal punishment can be stayed and executed most grave crime will stop.

A commendable piece of legislation to ban corporal punishment which was overdue. The legislation was necessary especially where personnel of the arms of the law were taking the law into their own hands by using devious inhuman methods at interrogation which was a human right violation. The flip side of the coin is that this legislation should not be a barrier in disciplining children not in an inhuman manner but with a view of ensuring children become good citizens of this country and become good leaders. The Bible very clearly says "do not spare the whip and spoil the child"!!!!
