New government initiative offers nutritious meals for Rs. 200

A new government initiative aimed at ensuring food security and making nutritious meals affordable for the public was officially launched today (01) at the "Palessa" restaurant of the National Food Promotion Board in Narahenpita.

According to the President Media Division, this project is being implemented in collaboration with the National Food Promotion Board, the Ministry of Health, and the Ministry of Agriculture. It also involves the support of existing restaurant businesses and is integrated with the "Clean Sri Lanka" programme.

Through this initiative, people can now enjoy specially prepared nutritious meals for as low as Rs. 200. The government also plans to introduce this balanced meal package to both public and private restaurants in the near future.

In addition to cooked meals, a variety of packaged local food products and nutritious snacks will also be made available to the public at affordable prices.

The event's special guest, Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Lands and Irrigation, K.D. Lalkantha, emphasized the importance of providing the public with high-quality, healthy, and sufficient meals. He stated that the project was launched in collaboration with the "Clean Sri Lanka" programme to guide the public and promote a positive shift in the commercial food sector.

This will fail when the state gets involved normal day to day business it will not succeed. Instead they create a environment for small medium restaurants operate in this clear strategy for these food outlets operate with proper guidelines otherwise these media gimmicks wont last an year

This is the same error that Dr.N.M.Perera started when he became Finance Minister. We ended up with so many Boards and Corporation that were a burden to the society. Kadju Corporation, Coconut Corporation, Tea Boards, you name it, we had it, with a heavy overhead expense. You need a Chairman, a Board of Directors, a separate building, even a peon. In the end they became white elephants. Government should govern. Period. Not to cook meals.

If you were to give a meal for Rs 200, then the cost of producing a meal should not exceed Rs 200 (if you consider all ECONOMIC costs - implicit and explicit opportunity costs). The question is, with today's market prices, can you produce a good meal at Rs 200? If not, someone has to subsidise the loss. If so, for how long can you provide such meals? Just a thought.

Its a great move. Well done NPP. I've seen similar success stories in Tamil Nadu called Amma unavagam. They give cheap yet healthy food to public. It was a hit.
