New gazette sets maximum retail price for medicines

Colombo, March 26 (Daily Mirror) - An Extraordinary Gazette Notification has been issued to implement a maximum retail price mechanism for medicines.

The notification was issued by the Minister of Health, Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa.

Under the new regulation, the National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA) is authorized to revise the maximum retail price twice a year. The NMRA holds the legal authority to adjust these prices at any time in the public’s interest, particularly if fluctuations in the value of the dollar impact costs.

Fair enough. Pharmaceuticals are very overpriced. With that being said, the availability of medicine must also be guaranteed in the quest for affordability. Lives depend on it. This should not be a gamble.

Trust me those price reduced medicines, mostly low quality from India or Bangladesh will be made available only through OSU Sala! Private pharmacies will carry out their business since the government cannot control them.

Ravi G, the government cannot/will not reduce charges on lab tests done in private laboratories. Instead you will be asked to go to a government hospital and stand in a queue to get those lab tests done for free! All the cheap medicines, poor in quality too, will be made available through OSU salas, just like the rubbish they give out through Sathosa.
