New chairman appointed to SLTB

Colombo, March 6 (Daily Mirror) - Jewaka Prasanna Purasinghe has assumed duties as the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) with effect from today.

He officially took office at the SLTB head office in Narahenpita in the presence of Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation Minister Bimal Rathnayake.

After assuming duties, the Chairman said that the SLTB is an institution that provides an important public service but currently faces many challenges.

“Although immediate changes are not possible, we are committed to working diligently to improve the SLTB. We are personally monitoring each depot across the island to enhance the quality of service provided to passengers. This is not an institution that cannot be rebuilt,” he said.

Purasinghe completed his primary and secondary education at St. Anthony's College, Matara, and holds a Science degree from the University of Kelaniya. He has held several senior positions in private institutions and is currently the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Engineering Company.

On the other hand this shows the confidence of appointing home grown educated youth of our own universities with love for the country to serve SL unlike cronies who did not do such a good job as seen from the plight we are in now. Old timers recall Mr. B D Rampala who entered the Colombo University College. After a few months training in the Police Department he joined the Railway Mechanical Engineering Department of the then Ceylon Government Railways and rose up and was the finest Gen Mgr of Railways we ever had.

At least stop importing "Lorry buses" to SLTB. Introduce proper busses and attract more passengers to build up SLTB

Biggest drawback is we have 2 system for SLTB and private buses. Both should bring in to unified process , SLTB will be another state own company in this scenario. Introduce secure digital payment system ( common period tickets or season ticket ) , busses tracking system , common time tables , area based pricing system , common revenue system such thing will remove bus competition on roads , creates standardized quality service, provide good income for the bus owners and SLTB. Changing head and adding more assets are temp solutions for the galley , build a strong national public transport policy

If he visits the depots he will see hundreds of buses parked that are not servicable. These buses may have different issues. If a Technical team inspect them I am sure taking spares from 3-4 buses they can put a bus on the road. If that is not possible sell them for scrap metal and clear the yards
