New app helps people report wild elephants and stay safe

Colombo, August 7 (Daily Mirror) - A new mobile app has been launched to help the public report real-time sightings of wild elephants, aiming to reduce the human-elephant conflict and enhance safety in affected areas.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror, Vinura Abeyrathne, one of the developers, said the app was created to minimise land damage and human casualties by alerting people when elephants are nearby.

“About 3,000 people in Sri Lanka are already using the app,” he said.

He explained that if an elephant is spotted in a certain area, users can report it through the app, and a notification is sent to others within a five

kilometre radius, warning them to stay alert and be cautious.

In addition to reporting elephant sightings, the app also allows users to report incidents such as elephant deaths, human deaths related to elephant encounters, property damage, and wildlife crimes.

This app is instrumental for the persons who regularly moving to the places such as agricultural fields homesteads and dairy farms. On the other hand sometimes this app may be a threat to the wild elephants and tuskers. The virulent poachers and other racketeers who wish to kill the elephants in order obtain tusks and ivory will use this app for their wrong doing. They can very easily trace the movements of the elephants using this app

Yeah ! Give me break this was developed using COVID-19 contact tracing application architecture (many developers are ware of this) originally back in 2022 . pending release was stopped due to vaccine roll-out. The application is not properly field tested. Like who is funding the backend costs ? it matters. Because the COVID app was fully funded by MOD and MOH.
