Negombo Prison clash death toll climbs to 31 after two more officers die

Colombo, July 14 (Daily Mirror) - The death toll from the violent clashes at Negombo Prison has risen to 31 after two more prison officers died while receiving treatment at the National Hospital in Colombo.

According to police, the officers, aged 25 and 39, succumbed to their injuries on July 13 and in the early hours of July 14. Their deaths bring the number of prison officers killed in the incident to ten.

The unrest, which erupted inside the prison on July 5 and 6, had previously claimed the lives of 21 inmates. With the latest fatalities, the combined death toll from the clashes has now reached 31.

Several injured prison officers and inmates continue to receive treatment at the National Hospital in Colombo and the Negombo Base Hospital.
