Nearly 71 percent of families depend on Aswesuma: Minister

Colombo, August 20 (Daily Mirror) - Nearly 71 percent of Sri Lankan families depend on the Aswesuma, the current Sri Lankan poverty aliviation programme, Minister of Rural Development, Social Security and Community Empowerment Upali Panilage told Parliament today.

He said some 3.7 million Aswesuma applications have been received currently.

Development we have achieved shows this percentage of receiving Aswesuma. Or else officials selecting families who is wealth enough? I have seen a video clip exchange in social media depicted from a well known TV channel, a boy saying that his mother goes to saloon and shopping by using of funds received to his grand mother from Aswesuma. But no action was taken by the authorities to the officers who selected that lady for Aswesuma.

3.7 million appliacnts cover 71% of Sri Lankans? Vey strange! Are they new applicants? Then how many people are working in the country? This may include poor former politicians too, I believe.

These are bogus applications. All the threewheeler fellows would have applied. Even the mason who earns Rs. 7,500 per day would have applied.

But it is difficult to find workers to do so many areas. 71% is too high , they shoukd fo a forensic audit using data analytics from time to time. First of all anyone aged less than 60 years and not disabled , should be subject to further verification. I am sure they will find huge fraud here.

Just because you received an application it doesn't mean they need it. Lot of the village folk have many income streams that are not registered or taxed. If a proper study was carried out, you'll know that the majority of them won't qualify.

The minister should know that there are "well to do" people who don't need welfare, but are pals of the officials who are getting this Aswesuma, while destitute widows are being denied the benefit.
