Colombo, May 5 (Daily Mirror) - Nearly 10,000 soldiers who deserted the Sri Lanka Army have received legal discharge as of May 4 during an amnesty period declared by Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Defence.

The Sri Lanka Army, under the Ministry of Defence's directive, has announced a General Amnesty from April 20, allowing all Army absentees to receive an official discharge from their service.

The general amnesty is in effect for one month, from April 20 to May 20, 2024. During this period, Army absentees have been given the opportunity to legally discharge from the Army in coordination with their respective Regimental Centers.

As of the end of the first two weeks of this amnesty period, between April 20, 2024, and May 4, 2024, a total of 9,735 Army personnel who were absent without leave since December 31, 2023, and earlier have been temporarily discharged from their Regimental Centers.

The Army said that 35 army deserters currently abroad are also among those who have received legal discharge.

Keep granting amnesties. Army will turn into a mockery with people walking in and out like tea shop. Probably that's the ulterior motive of Ranil. So India can takeover Sri Lanka

These deserters are either cowards, work-shy, have joined criminal gangs or unscrupulous politicians. It should not be forgotten that they have voluntarily concluded a non-cancellable employment contract for a limited period of time to serve in the army. Even though Sri Lanka is considered untrustworthy worldwide due to the constant breaches of contracts by the government and companies, the government must show strength and maintain discipline in this sensitive area of national security. Deserters must be hunted down nationwide by military police and tried by a military court. A sentence of 2 years in a military labour camp would be appropriate, provided no further crimes were committed, of course without payment, pension entitlements and severance payments. From there they should be called upon to do community service work, such as cleaning beaches and canals under heavy guard, if necessary in chain gangs. Apart from that, the Sri Lanka military should be reduced by 70%.

This is a piece of cake for these deserters. No Military or Services Commanders have taken to task deserters and bring them to book. They must be tracked compulsorily made to work in Agricultural fields as a punishment for deserters. Those who have been hiding behind politicians, and serving the criminal mafias must be punished for a lengthy period of time. How could one be released from a contract sans adequate compensation to the Govt? This has created a serious issue with the Govt and political interference. A big administrative problem.
