Navy brings ashore two boats carrying drugs, weapons

Colombo, March 12 (Daily Mirror) - Two multi-day fishing boats carrying drugs and weapons in international waters south of the island were brought to Dikkowita Fisheries Harbour today (12), following a Navy operation.

The Sri Lanka Navy also arrested 10 suspects on board the vessels, all reportedly residents of the Southern Province.

The boats were identified during a special operation conducted recently using long-range Sri Lanka Navy vessels in international waters south of the island.

On one of the fishing boats, authorities discovered a large quantity of drugs weighing over 600 kilograms, along with eight pistols with magazines, two T56 rifles, and an M16 rifle. The M16-type firearm is typically reserved for special security forces personnel.

Officials suspect the second fishing boat was monitoring the first vessel to provide support.

Deputy Defence Minister, the Inspector General of Police and the Sri Lanka Navy Commander were also present at Dikkowita Fisheries Harbour to witness the drugs being brought ashore.
