Jaffna, March 17 (Daily Mirror) - The Sri Lanka Navy has seized a total of 18 Indian poaching trawlers and 146 Indian fishermen within Sri Lankan waters in 2024.
In a latest incident, the Navy seized two Indian trawlers and arrested 21 Indian fishermen poaching in Sri Lankan waters off the Delft Island.
The Navy said they conducted a special operation to chase away Indian poaching trawlers from Sri Lankan waters during the dark hours of yesterday and the arrest was made during this operation.
The Sri Lanka Navy continues to conduct regular patrols and operations in Sri Lankan waters to curb illegal fishing practices of foreign trawlers, taking into account the impact of those practices on the livelihood of local fishermen.
The seized trawlers together with 21 Indian fishermen were brought to the Kankesanthurai Harbour and handed over to the Mailadi Fisheries Inspector for onward legal proceedings.

Somebody take a quick action! Sunday, 17 March 2024 08:56 PM
Some years back late ASP Arumugam destroyed these illegal boats in Mannar, to curtail illegal fishing menace. Do we need to re-start this action?

What is the end result? They get released and come back again and again. The value of fish they have stolen from our seas could be in billions , probably more than the USD 4B credit line given to us.
When can afford buy drones to patrol for poachers and smugglers Monday, 18 March 2024 08:17 AM
Maldives had apparently been losing 50% revernue, from taxes due to Indians poaching their fish without permission. Now they are desperate and bought drones to keep the Indian poaching menace under control. Here not only for poaching, but also drug smuggling by sea can be better brought under control with drones. The Navy ships can then stay stationary until a criminal is spotted and then can pounce on them.
LTTE government would just kill Tamil Nadu fisherman they caught Monday, 18 March 2024 08:19 AM
Tamil Nadu illegal fishers can be thankful LTTE never got into power. Otherwise unlike our Navy which keeps to international conventions, the Indian illegal fishers would be killed, until their coming into our seas ended.

There is only one way to stop it. Unleash gold smuggling into India, and the Indians themselves will not allow one boat move an inch towards Lanka. Anyway most of these boats only smuggle gold as there is hardly any fish in the waters below. If Lanka reduces taxes and restrictions on gold, this menace will stop in a split second.
