Namal urges swift action over Kotahena schoolgirl’s death

Colombo, May 6 (Daily Mirror) - MP Namal Rajapaksa said today that they are closely following the case of the schoolgirl who committed suicide in Kotahena recently and urged Education Minister Harini Amarasuriya to act swiftly, regardless of any connections.

He made this comment in a message posted on the X platform, stating that no child should have to suffer in this way.

A 16-year-old schoolgirl in Colombo tragically ended her life after allegedly being publicly humiliated at a private tuition class over a past incident.

However, the victim's parents revealed that their daughter had been driven to this decision after being cornered and humiliated over an incident of sexual abuse at her former school in Bambalapitiya.

Ceylon Teachers’ Union (CTU) General Secretary Joseph Stalin told the media that the Education Ministry had failed to intervene in the matter.

He stated that, in the event of such incidents, it is mandatory for the Education Ministry to step in and investigate, but in this instance, the Ministry had failed to do so.

“The incident occurred in a state school. There are Tamil-speaking officials. Even though complaints from children are reported at several state schools, they are not investigated into. Authorities wait until a child loses his or her life,” he said.

Joseph Stalin pointed out that if the authorities, including the Education Ministry, had taken timely action and conducted investigations in collaboration with the Police, such student deaths could have been prevented.

Calling for justice for the child and her family, the CTU General Secretary urged the Education Ministry to carry out a comprehensive investigation into the incident and take legal action against those found responsible.

He added that a request has also been made to the Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) to conduct a thorough probe into the matter.
