Namal urges preparedness amid rising global tensions

Colombo, February 28 (Daily Mirror) - Former Minister and MP Namal Rajapaksa has called on the government to remain vigilant and prepared in the face of escalating global tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.

In a statement posted on “X,” Rajapaksa said Sri Lanka understands the heavy cost of conflict, recalling the decades of war that deeply affected lives, communities, and the national economy.

He strongly condemned violence in all its forms, stressing that small nations like Sri Lanka inevitably feel the ripple effects of major power confrontations.

He warned that disruptions to global trade, energy supplies, and supply chains could have direct consequences on livelihoods, markets, and essential services in Sri Lanka. Rajapaksa urged the government to anticipate potential risks, strengthen contingency planning, and extend support to sectors and communities that may be impacted.

Expressing concern for Sri Lankans living and working in regions affected by unrest, he emphasized that safeguarding citizens both at home and abroad must remain a top priority.

Reflecting on Sri Lanka’s own experience, Rajapaksa noted that even during the latter stages of the country’s internal conflict, efforts were made to pursue dialogue and diplomacy as the path toward lasting peace.

He underscored the importance of consistent global engagement, warning that the international community cannot selectively respond to crises.

Promoting dialogue, maintaining stability, and preparing for possible consequences, he said, remain the most effective routes to ensuring security and prosperity both domestically and across the region.
