Colombo, August 3 (Daily Mirror) - SLPP National Organizer Namal Rajapaksa has accused the government of politicizing the National Youth Services Council (NYSC) and suppressing independent youth activism, following the arrest of a district youth leader.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Rajapaksa said the arrest of Poorna Sathyajith, former Chairman of the Kalutara District Youth Federation, for allegedly opposing the move was “a clear act of oppression.”
“We strongly condemn the government’s act of politicizing the National Youth Services Council, which is a huge blow to the overall youth population in the country,” he said.
Calling the incident “not just an attack on one individual but an assault on independent youth leadership in Sri Lanka,” Rajapaksa urged the government to stop interfering in civil society and youth institutions.
“We strongly urge the government to stop politicizing civil society and independent organizations including youth councils, in order to maintain democracy and a fair and just system,” he added.
