Colombo, Sept. 26 (Daily Mirror) - Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) National Organiser MP Namal Rajapaksa has proceeded with legal action against Deputy Minister of Public Security Sunil Watagala over what he described as defamatory remarks.
The move comes after Watagala alleged that Rajapaksa was “behind the drug menace” in the country.
The dispute has intensified through a series of legal exchanges. On September 10, Attorney Sankha Karunaratne, acting on behalf of Rajapaksa, sent a letter of demand seeking Rs. 1 billion in damages from the Deputy Minister.
In response, Watagala, through Attorney Manjula Balasuriya, issued a letter of demand on September 22, seeking Rs. 2 billion in compensation from Rajapaksa.
Confirming his decision today, Rajapaksa said he has moved forward with legal proceedings, stressing that defamatory allegations of this nature cannot be taken lightly.
